The exhibition “The first engineer of Russia” dedicated to the remembrance of Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov opened in the State central museum of modern history of Russia yesterday. The opening of the exhibition was attended by Alexander Sergeevich Dzasokhov, chairman of the RF Federation Council Commission for culture, Felix Leonidovich Chernousko, Irina Georgievna Goryacheva, Robert Veniaminovich Goldshtein, the RAN academicians, Igor Andreevich Beketov, general director of the “LUKOIL” welfare fund”, Vladimir Fyodorovich Shukhov, president of the “Shukhov Tower” Foundation.

While making a speech at the opening ceremony, Alexander Sergeevich Dzasokhov noted the uniqueness of Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov, whose genius had been defining the achievements of Russia and its international priority in different spheres of engineering for more than half a century.

He also reminded that the outstanding talent of a designer, logic and wide outlook of a scientist combined in V.G. Shukhov with the aesthetic taste of an artist. It is not an accident, in the opinion of the senator, that the legendary “Shukhov Tower”, consisting of sections-hyperboloids directed high into the air, inspired Alexey Tolstoy for the creation of a science fiction novel “Hyperboloid of engineer Garin”.

In modern Russia the development of innovative technologies is one of the priority tasks. In this connection, according to A.S. Dzasokhov, it is especially important to be attentive to the heritage of our great compatriots, what the exhibition “The first engineer of Russia” is calling for.

While opening the exhibition, Tamara Grigorievna Shumnaya, director of the museum of modern history of Russia noted the importance of holding the exhibition in the days of remembrance of Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov and during the celebration of 70 years from the beginning of regular television broadcasts via the transmitters of the Shukhov tower.

In his speech Sergey Vladimirovich Sergeev, curator of the exhibition, director of the company “LUKOIL” museum emphasized the great significance of V.G. Shukhov’s achievements for the oil field of Russia and the many-sided nature of his creative activity.

Vladimir Fyodorovich Shukhov, president of the “Shukhov Tower” Foundation thanked the oil company “LUKOIL”, the museum of modern history of Russia, the museum of the N.E. Bauman MGTU, the International union NIO, the sculptor Salavat Aleksandrovich Sherbakov and all the people who rendered assistance in preparation of the exhibition, and expressed hope that holding of the exhibition will help to focus public opinion and the opinion of authorities on the necessity to preserve and restore the Shukhov tower in Shabolovka, Moscow and to set up Shukhov center at the foot of the tower.

The exhibition surprised first visitors by exhibits emphasizing the versatile interests of Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov. From the 80s of XIX century till the 30s of XX century his works defined the domestic engineering achievements in the oil-gas field, the construction of oil pipelines, oil storages, tankers, unique steel structures, steam boilers and other complex technical systems.

The exposition covers different life periods of the great engineer. In particular, the exhibition gives an opportunity to see the graduation photo of V.G. Shukhov, the typical uniform and the sword of a graduate of the Moscow emperor technical school (nowadays MGTU named after Bauman), as well as the exhibits telling about the student’s years of the future famous engineer and about his trip to the 1876 World’s exhibition in Philadelphia, USA in the group of the emperor technical school delegation. The exposition represents the first edition of the D.I. Mendeleev’s book “Foundations of the factory-plant industry” with the image of the V.G. Shukhov’s atomizer for the burning of black oil on the cover. Furthermore, there are personal belongings of Shukhov – the drawing device which was bought during the trip to the USA and which served him till the end of his life, as well the camera.
Shukhov by Faberge

A special impression is given by the massive silver frame of Faberge make, which was granted to V.G. Shukhov in honor of the 15-year work with the firm Bari. The composition of jewelry masterpieces reflects the unique achievements of V.G. Shukhov: the hyperboloid tower, lattice shells of the overhead covers of the buildings, the world’s first plant for the industrial oil cracking.

Only few people know that the great engineer by vocation was a photographer in his soul. The aesthetic intuition of a photo artist combined in his photography with the logic of a scientist. V.G. Shukhov left several thousand photos and negatives, some of which are also represented at the exhibition.
