On November 10 in Sretensky boulevard in Moscow there was placed the monument to Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov, academician, Great engineer, author of the projects of the first domestic oil pipelines, oil storages and oil refineries, creator of the unique constructional structures and bearing lattice shells which have found broad application in avant-garde architecture of the XXI century, inventor of the numerous complex technical systems.
This grand monument is a gift of oil company “LUKOIL” to the city of Moscow. The authors of the monument are the Honored painter of Russia Salavat Aleksandrovich Sherbakov, his son – sculptor and architect Sergey Salavatovich Sherbakov and Vladimir Fyodorovich Shukhov, great grandson of the Great engineer, member of the Russia’s Union of painters
The idea of placing a monument to V.G. Shukhov appeared more than twenty years ago with V.F. Shukhov and S.A. Sherbakov. For a long time the genius designer lived and worked in the area of the boulevard ring and Myasnitskaya street crossing, loved to walk along the Sretensky and Chistoprudny boulevards. In autumn of 2002 Nikolay Konstantinovich Baibakov, former Chairman of the USSR Gosplan, in conversation with V.F. Shukhov supported the idea of placing a monument to the Great engineer. After that, on November 25, 2002 there was written an appeal to Vagit Yusufovich Alekperov, president of company “LUKOIL” with a request of assistance in immortalizing the memory of V.G. Shukhov, outstanding engineer and oilman, and placing its monument in Sretensky boulevard in Moscow. The letter was signed by: N.K. Baibakov, N.P. Laverov, vice-president of RAN and A.I. Vladimirov, chancellor of I.M. Gubkin RGU of oil and gas, who also supported the idea of placing a monument.
Company “LUKOIL” allocated money for the construction of a monument and its further donation to the city. In summer of 2003 the group initiating the placing of a monument was joined by the International union of scientific and engineering public associations (NIO Union), which undertook to settle current matters of cooperation with the Moscow Government. In autumn of 2003 the most active representatives of the group of initiators led by Vladimir Fyodorovich Shukhov, great grandson of the Great engineer established the “Shukhov Tower” Foundation, which together with the NIO Union coordinated the preparation activities for placing a monument.
