The “Shukhov Tower” Foundation considers it necessary to draw attention of the public, of the administrative and commercial bodies to the state protection and restoration of a few memorials of industrial architecture located in Krasnodar region. The memorials of industrial culture emphasize the noble contribution of Russia to the development of North Caucasus, they are the tourist places of attraction and their significance becomes especially high in connection with the winter Olympic Games to be held in the city of Sochi.
In particular, the main memorials of Russian industrial culture on the territory of Krasnodar region comprise unique objects that were built under the projects of Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov, Academician, the brilliant Russian engineer: Grozny – Tuapse oil pipeline, steel railway bridge over the Ashe River, hyperboloid steel water tower in the city of Krasnodar and steel riveted tanks-oil storages.
Due to the thoughtless reconstruction of the bridge over the Ashe River its original historical look was lost, though in any West European country an ancient steel bridge is a valuable tourist object.
The steel lattice water tower in Krasnodar, one of the few survived unique Shukhov’s hyperboloid towers, does not have the up-to-date anticorrosion coating, proper illumination and there is no tourist infrastructure around it. Though just several years ago the tower looked delightful, it was properly illuminated and was one of the main places of the city’s attraction and one of its symbols. The late talks that the tower may be possibly dismantled and carried to another place cause a special kind of alert. Any historical memorial is especially valuable by anchoring to its historical place.
On November 7, 2008 the Grozny-Tuapse oil pipeline will be 80. It was built according to the designs and under the technical guidance of Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov, Academician, designer of the first Russian oil pipelines and equipment for the first oil enterprises of Russia. Owing to the original technical decisions implemented in its design and the complexity of the whole project, the Grozny-Tuapse oil pipeline was in due course the model for imitation all over the world. The world’s first welding of tubes with big diameter was applied on this oil pipeline.
During 80 years of its existence the Grozny-Tuapse oil pipeline was reconstructed, but the first elements of the construction built in Shukhov’s time survived in Maikop and Tuapse. Several riveted steel Shukhov’s tanks survived on the territory of Krasnodar region. Several Shukhov’s constructions survived in Tuapse at the petroleum refinery, at the petroleum storage depot and in the area of oil terminal of the port. These objects could become attractive for many foreign tourists, provided that the tourist access to these objects and special excursions are properly organized and the relevant tourist infrastructure is developed.
The oil sector is the Russia’s pride and it must be suitably demonstrated to the guests of the forthcoming winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
In the time left before the Sochi Olympic Games it is necessary to do the following:
1. To restore the span of the Shukhov’s bridge adjacent to the left bank of the Ashe River in accordance with the original look of the construction.
2. To do restoration works on the Shukhov’s tower in the city of Krasnodar and to provide its illumination during the dark period of the day according to the world standards.
3. To do necessary works regarding the restoration and mothballing of other memorials of industrial and architectural heritage on the territory of Krasnodar region, including objects connected with the works of V.G. Shukhov in the field of oil extraction, storage and transportation.
On August 28, 2008 the Great Russian engineer Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov will be 155. The Foundation appeals to the public and its volunteers with a request to render assistance in collecting the detailed information about the condition of the Shukhov’s constructions located in the south of Russia. The Foundation also calls the state and private companies and administrative bodies to contribute to the preservation of the V.G. Shukhov’s heritage in Krasnodar region.
