The Shukhov Tower Foundation has arranged the monitoring of condition for the major part of the surviving constructions of Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov in Russia and abroad.

The following constructions were built from 1878 till 1939 on the territories of Russian Empire and USSR according to the projects of V.G. Shukhov:

— about 1600 km of pipelines for the transportation of oil and oil products;

— over 10000 steel cylindrical reservoirs for oil and oil products storage;

— over 100 steel cylindrical gas-holders for gas storage;

— about 90 river tankers (oil barges);

— over 8000 steam boilers of Shukhov’s system;

— over 500 steel bridges;

— over 200 steel lattice hyperboloid towers;

— over 100 constructions of the industrial and railway buildings;

— over 100 overhead covers of the public and civil buildings.

From that enormous quantity only 30 constructions have preserved till our time, and two thirds of them are the memorials of architecture and are protected by law. Despite the protection by law some unique, recognized and studied abroad constructions of Shukhov were destroyed as a result of incompetent decisions or plundered for metal scrap: the round pavilion-rotunda with hanging lattice steel cover in Essentuki, part of the Bakhmetiev garage’s overhead cover in Moscow, one of two 128-meter lattice steel towers-supports of the NiGRES electric main passage over Oka River near Nizhniy Novgorod, some lattice hyperboloid water towers.

In order to control the condition of the surviving constructions of V.G. Shukhov, the specialists and the Foundation’s volunteers checked the following structures from May till August, 2006:

  1. The Shukhov Tower in Shabolovka, Moscow — the structure needs partial restoration and anticorrosion coating.
  2. The overhead covers of Upper trade lines (GUM) in Moscow.
  3. The landing-stage of Kievskiy station in Moscow.
  4. The translucent covers of Pushkin GMII in Moscow.
  5. The translucent coves of “Metropol” hotel in Moscow.
  6. The translucent covers of Petrovskiy arcade in Moscow.
  7. The translucent cover of the main hall of the Moscow post office.
  8. The world’s first hyperboloid tower in Polibino, Lipetsk region – the structure needs partial restoration and anticorrosion coating.
  9. The 128-meter tower-support of NiGRES electric main on Oka River near Nizhniy Novgorod – it is dismantled and part of steel profiles is stolen. The structure is in the emergency condition.
  10. The world’s first steel lattice overhead covers of double curvature over the plate-rolling workshop of the metallurgical plant in Vyksa.
  11. The hyperboloid tower at the metallurgical plant in Vyksa.
  12. The hyperboloid fire tower in KIM Street, Nizhniy Novgorod.
  13. The hyperboloid tower in Lobnya near Moscow.
  14. The water tower in Borisov, Byelorussia.
  15. The water tower in Nikolaev, Ukraine.
  16. The water tower in Pomoshnaya, Ukraine.
  17. The water tower in Cherkassy, Ukraine.
  18. The hyperboloid tower of Shukhov in Krasnodar.
  19. The steel railway bridge over Ashe River in the area of Sochi.
  20. The section of oil pipeline of Shukhov’s design in the area of Tuapse.
  21. The riveted cylindrical reservoir of Shkhov’s design at the railway station in Vladimir.
  22. The steam boiler of Shukhov’s system in the Museum of ancient machinery in the town of Myshkin, Yaroslavl region.

In order to monitor the condition of constructions, protected by law, on a regular basis, the Foundation’s volunteers have been assigned for the major part of the checked constructions.

In September, the group of international experts from Germany and Austria will examine damages of the 128-meter tower-support of NiGRES electric main on Oka River near Nizhniy Novgorod.
